SAS reads -1 in a MYSQL table as 0

I have a MYSQL database back-end for an Access application and the database is housed on a Linux server.

There are check-boxes in the Access application that show up as '-1' or '0' when viewed using Access, '1' or '0' when viewed in MYSQL. When I like to this table using an ODBC connection, SAS reads the data in as '0' for all fields, even though some of them should be read in as either '1' or '-1'. How do I get SAS to read the data in as something other than 0?
